Cancer Treatment with a Cosmetic Benefit
For women with larger breasts facing breast cancer surgery, oncoplastic breast reduction offers a unique approach: it combines a lumpectomy (removal of the tumor) with a breast reduction and reshaping procedure—all in one operation. The goal is to remove the cancer safely while also improving breast symmetry, shape, and comfort.
This technique merges the principles of cancer surgery with plastic surgery. Dr. Samarth Gupta works alongside your breast surgeon to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue, then uses reduction and reshaping techniques to sculpt a smaller, lifted, and more symmetrical breast.
If needed, the opposite breast can also be reduced or reshaped during the same procedure to improve symmetry.
Oncoplastic reduction may be ideal if:
The procedure starts with your lumpectomy, during which the tumor and a rim of healthy tissue are removed. Dr. Gupta then performs a breast reduction and reshaping, tailoring the breast to a natural and youthful contour. If needed, the opposite breast is also addressed for balance.
Most patients go home the same day or the next morning and return to normal activities in 1–2 weeks. Radiation therapy can usually proceed safely without delays or wound issues, thanks to the healthy reshaped tissue.
These involve reshaping the remaining breast tissue after tumor removal, often using breast reduction or lift techniques. It’s ideal for women with moderate to large breasts. The opposite breast may also be adjusted for symmetry.
When not enough tissue remains after cancer removal, tissue from another part of the body (usually the back or abdomen) is used to replace lost volume. This is helpful for smaller-breasted women or larger resections.
These are advanced volume replacement techniques using tissue that includes only skin and fat (no muscle), such as:
They offer natural feel and good cosmetic outcomes with minimal donor site morbidity.
Oncoplastic reconstruction is done in the same surgery as your lumpectomy. Recovery varies based on the technique used—most patients return to normal activities in 2–3 weeks, with full healing over 6 weeks. Radiation therapy usually proceeds without delay.
